What a move day actually looks like
We confirm the night before and give you an arrival window instead of a single minute, because the first job of the day sets the tone for everything behind it. When we pull up, one of us walks the house with you while the others start laying runners at the door. We want three things settled before anything moves: what is fragile, what is staying, and where the big pieces go on the other end. Five minutes of that saves an hour of carrying a dresser into the wrong bedroom.
Then it is padding and loading. Dressers get blanketed and shrink wrapped with the drawers left in. Tables come apart when the legs are bolted, and the hardware goes in a bag taped to the underside of the top. Mattresses get bagged. Anything with glass gets wrapped twice and stood on edge against the wall of the truck. You are not expected to carry a thing, though plenty of customers walk boxes out anyway and we have never turned down free help.
At the new place we set furniture where it goes, put the beds back together, and stack boxes in the room they are labeled for. If nothing is labeled we just ask room by room. The last step is opening the truck with you so you can see it is empty.
Why the short drive is the easy part
New Lenox to Mokena is about fifteen minutes unless the lights on Lincoln Highway are having a bad afternoon. So the drive is almost never what costs you money. The carry is. A raised ranch with a split entry eats more clock than four miles of road ever will, and a long driveway can add twenty minutes a load in walking alone.

Longer runs work a little differently. Heading up into the Chicago suburbs or across to Dyer or Valparaiso, we are still hourly, but travel is priced on its own and we want an earlier start so it all lands in one day instead of spilling into two.
Winter, weather, and the things nobody plans for
Half the moves around here happen between May and September and those are simple. The other half happen in February with salt on every walk in Will County. We bring extra runners for those, knock boots at the door, and keep a squeegee on the truck. Cardboard goes soft fast when it is wet, so on a snow day we load boxes first and furniture last so nothing sits in the driveway soaking.
Rain is harder on a move than snow, because water goes through a box in about a minute. We shrink wrap upholstered pieces inside the house rather than at the tailgate, and we shorten the walk from door to truck even if that means backing across the grass, which we always ask about first.
The other thing that reliably goes sideways is a closing date sliding. It happens constantly here. Tell us the moment you know and we move the date. If the gap leaves your things with nowhere to go for a few days, we can load into a storage unit and bring it back out when the keys are actually in your hand.

Does the clock run while you are driving between the houses?
Yes, the same as it does while we are carrying. On a move inside the southwest suburbs that drive is usually fifteen minutes or less, which is why we charge a flat travel fee instead of padding the hourly rate.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to three weeks is comfortable most of the year. The last weekend of the month and the last week of June and July fill up first because that is when leases and closings land. Midweek is almost always open on shorter notice.
Does everything need to be in boxes before you arrive?
It should be, and it is the single biggest thing you control on the bill. Loose items get carried one armful at a time, which is slow at $150 an hour. Furniture, mattresses and anything awkward you can leave to us. Dresser drawers can stay full of clothes.
Is there anything you will not put on the truck?
Propane tanks, gas cans, paint, ammunition, aquariums with water in them and hot tubs. We also ask you to carry cash, jewelry and medications in your own car. Everything else in a normal house we handle.
