None of that is a moving job in the normal sense, and it should not be priced like one. We quote single items flat, we usually fit them around the bigger jobs on the schedule, and we can often do them within a day or two of the call. Two of us come either way, because one person and a dolly is how furniture gets dropped.

What Is Included
Marketplace pickups and the seller you have never met
This has become one of our steadier calls. Somebody buys a dresser or a couch online, the seller is fifteen minutes away in Manhattan or Shorewood, and neither of them owns a truck. We meet the seller, load it, and bring it to you. You do not have to be at the pickup, though we do want a phone number for the person on that end and a clear address, because a wrong house number burns half an hour.
One thing worth being honest about: we are moving it, not inspecting it. If the piece is already broken, wobbly, or larger than the photos suggested, we will tell you what we see and send you a picture before it goes on the truck, but the decision to take it is yours. We would rather stop for two minutes than deliver something you would have passed on.
Retail and warehouse pickups work the same way. Bring us the order number and the pickup window and we will handle the dock. Some stores want the buyer present with ID, so check before you assume we can pick it up on your behalf.
One piece, two staircases
The price on a single item is set by the piece and the path, not by the mileage. A couch going from a living room to a living room is straightforward. That same couch coming up out of a finished basement in a New Lenox split level, around a landing, and then down into a basement at the other end is a different job, and we would rather say that at quote time than surprise you with it.
So when you call, tell us two things: what floor it is on now and what floor it is going to. If there is a turn at the bottom of the stairs, a picture of that turn tells us more than any measurement you could give us over the phone. We pull doors off hinges routinely and take the feet off sofas, and between the two of those most pieces make it.
Appliances are their own category. A refrigerator needs to be emptied, the water line shut off at the valve, and ideally unplugged the night before so the defrost water has somewhere to go besides your floor. Gas ranges and gas dryers need the line disconnected and capped by a plumber before we get there. We will not guess at a gas fitting in somebody's kitchen.
When one item turns into three
Half the time the single item call turns into a short list once we are talking. A couch, and while you are here can you take the recliner upstairs, and the old dresser is going to the curb anyway. That is fine, and at some point it stops being a flat priced delivery and becomes a cheaper hourly job. Three or more pieces is almost always better for you at $150 an hour with the two hour minimum than paying per item.
We will tell you which way is cheaper rather than letting you pick the expensive one. On a two hour minimum you have plenty of room for four or five pieces around town, and the flat item price only wins when the job is genuinely one thing.
Pianos, gun safes and pool tables get quoted separately no matter how many there are, because they need different handling and a different number of people.

Inside the core service area the flat $50 travel fee applies. Longer pickups into Chicago or northwest Indiana run $75 to $125 in travel. Frequently Asked Questions
How much to move just one couch?
$250 to $300 if it is ground floor on both ends, and $300 to $400 if there are stairs involved. That is the whole price, including the two of us, the truck, blankets and the wrap. Add the $50 travel fee inside our area.
Can you pick something up from a Facebook Marketplace seller?
Yes, and it is a regular call for us. Give us the seller's address and phone number and the pickup window. You do not need to be there. We will send a photo before we load if the piece is not what you expected.
Do I need to be home for the delivery?
Somebody does, so we know where the piece goes and so you can look at it before we leave. If that is not possible, an unlocked garage works and we will send photos of where we set it.
Will you move a refrigerator between houses?
Yes. Empty it, shut the water line at the valve, and unplug it the night before if you can. We disconnect the water line and take the doors off if a doorway is tight. Gas appliances need a plumber to cap the line before we arrive.
How soon can you come out?
Often within a day or two, sometimes the same day, because single items fit around the bigger jobs on the schedule. Weekends in the summer are the hardest to squeeze into.
